Hello everyone and God bless: This is such a beautiful tradition that was practiced by Saint Faustina and those in her convent according to her diary. Each New Year they would place all the names of their favorite Saints in a basket and many names of Saints they did not yet know alot about and then each one would pick out a name of a Saint. This was alluded to as the Saint was actually picking them to be with them for the New Year and remain a Patron Saint forever. While doing this they promised to "get to know" this Saint by reading about them and through prayer. Also have to pray to this Saint on a daily basis. I have been doing this (and my daughter) since 2001 and I have had so many beautiful Saints take an interest in me and my poor life. Try it! Tricia Goguen

At the beginning of this month, I was reading the Gospel reading from Mark with my children in preparation for the upcoming Sept. 6, 2009 Sunday liturgy. The Gospel was from Mark 7:31-37 about Jesus healing the deaf man. After reading the scripture, my 7 year old son (our little thinker) asked me "Why didn't Jesus want anyone to tell about the miracle He just performed?" I wasn't exactly sure how to answer his thought-provoking question. The only thing I could come up with was that Jesus knew people's hearts were not going to be open to the miracle account even if the crowd ran to tell others. What do I say to my children about the times in scripture when Jesus orders others not to mention his miracles that he performs? I have often wondered the same question as my son. Thanks!

I was hoping you could shed some light on the Catholic perception of St. Dismas. I recently went to a Tenebrae service which presented reflections of our Lords Passion from the perspective of those witnessing it. One of the perspectives came from a Zealot named Jonathan, who stated that Dismas was himself a Zealot who was being punished for his crimes against the Roman government. I was wondering what Catholic teaching on this was, as the strongest support I've found for this take, comes from an Astronomy site. Any Catholic sites are very vague on the past of St. Dismas.

As I have expressed my strong opposition to it, she has now thrown at me that, if I'm going to use religion against this, I should use it across the board. She asked me if I have had my children vaccinated, and then said that according to my standards, that should be immoral since many of them are made with aborted fetuses. Her argument for embryonic stem cell research is that, if those embryos are going to be thrown out anyway, they should at least be used for some good. How is having our children vaccinated with vaccines made from aborted babies any different? I don't know how to answer this.

Hi everyone: I am interested in other peoples belief systems regarding the big, bad boy and how he works. I was talking to my daughter the other morning about the book I just read, "Left to Tell" about finding God during the Rwandan holocaust. In one part as she is hiding from her killers in the bathroom with the other women, she hears a voice in her head which she believes is the devil. How he kept telling her not to pray and why she believed that God would save her and so on. As I told my daughter about this, I thought that I shouldn't say the name even out loud so that he wouldn't mess with me. (A priest once told me that the devil can't read our minds, but can certainly hear our words) When I got to work, a couple of girls were talking about a faith-filled, God-filled novel they had read and how much they loved it. Then one of them said, "I don't know, I just picture God up there with a little black book and He is making all sorts of suffering going on." I said, "I have a little booklet you can read that tells us how much He loves us and that life happens to us and he is there to make good even out of evil." All of a sudden she looks at me and says, No thanks, I believe the way I believe and I don't need anyone shoving their religion down my throat. And she walked away. I was so stunned, I've never seen her like that and I didn't feel like I was shoving anything anywhere. But I felt like I'd been attacked by Satan himself and was upset all the day long. I kept trying to get past it by thinking about how Jesus suffered so many verbal attacks during His public ministry and then especially how He suffered physically, but I felt melancholy all day. Please, if you want to, tell me what your thoughts are on these kind of things. Was I overreacting? Thanks, Tricia from MA

Left to Tell is a gripping account of one woman's experience during the brutal genocide that occurred in Rwanda in 1994 where one million people were brutally murdered in a three month period. Immaculée is a Catholic woman who survived the slaughter that claimed the lives of her family. For 91 days she and seven other women hid in the cramped bathroom of a local pastor's home while hundreds of machete-wielding killers hunted for them. It was during those endless hours of unspeakable terror that she discovered the power of prayer and uncondiotional love. She forged a deep and living relationship with God and she emerged from her hideout having truly discovered the meaning of unconditional love, so much so that she was able to sincerely forgive her family's killers. This triumphant story of a woman's journey through the darkness of genocide will truly inspire anyone whose life has been touched by fear, suffering and loss.

We were approached by a man at a party this weekend who was a strong advocate for abused and neglected children. He made it VERY clear that the reason he is voting for Obama is because of funding for this child advocacy group. We took this great opportunity to ask him about the innocent children that are murdered every day from abortion and got the typical response: "Oh, I say keep the government out of our bedrooms....its a woman's choice.....these are kids alive on this planet now that I am trying to help..........there are many unwanted pregnancies and ill-equipped mothers......and what about rape victims???" We have some websites to direct him to and think he will at least be willing to read about it, but we would love your opinion(and anyone else reading this blog) to share what you would have said to this man at the party. We wanted to talk about the fact that these children he so strongly advocates for would be far less neglected and abused if the sanctity of human life was1st in the minds of the world but found ourselves unable to come up with just the right words. please help....
